Examples Besides Exercise
Union of Sets
Example 1:
Consider the following sets X and Y
X={1,2,3}
Y={4,5,6}
Now You Need to find out the union of these both sets.You can write XUY to find out the union.
1: First you write both sets like this
XUY = {1,2,3} U {4,5,6}
2: In union you write all the elements of each set in a single set, by element we mean the entries in set A and B.
XUY = {1,2,3,4,5,6}
Example 2:
Now consider another example where the set A and B have some common elements.
A={1,2,3,4,5}
B={4,5,6,7,8}
Now if we find AUB, we will write all the elements in set A and B. As we can see that there are some elements
that are common in both A and B so we will write them once.
AUB={1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8}
Intersection of sets
Example 1
Consider the following Sets A and B
A={1,2,3,4,5}
B={3,4,5,6,7}
Now if you are asked to fiind the intersection of these two sets then you will write all the common elements of both
sets into a new sets and we denote intersection between two sets by ∩ this symbol or A∩B
A∩B={1,2,3,4,5}∩{3,4,5,6,7}
A∩B={3,4,5}
Here 3,4 and 5 are the common elements in these both of the sets.
